Liberia: Fragile Threads

Martin Adler's reporting from the civil war in Liberia in 2003 remains a highlight in his career.

Almost alone throughout the weeks of heavy fighting between Charles Taylor's child soldiers and the equally young rebel groups, Martin witnessed both the fragile threads between life and death in these youngsters as well as the innocence-turned-to-brainwashing that the kids had been subjected to by Taylor and the warlords. 'I felt I'd landed in the middle of some mad party', he said. His pictures capture an atmosphere reminiscent of Lord of the Flies in which children were fighting a war with almost no control or understanding of its consequences.
