Soaked in Somerset

Britain has experienced the wettest January since 1767 and overflowing rivers are bursting their banks, adding to standing water on sodden fields that has nowhere to flow. The village of Muchelney on the Somerset Levels has been particularly badly affected, having become cut off from surrounding countryside for over a month. All travel in an out of the village is done by means of police and fire service boats which follow the course of what used to be road leading to the neighbouring village of Langport. Ironically, the village is recorded in the Doomsday Book as 'Micelenie' which means 'the increasingly great island'. Tom Pilston took a boat ride to see how the villagers are living in their new watery world.
