Young Turks

These photographs were taken in the middle of Taksim Square, the heart of modern Istanbul.

The word Taksim has its origins in the Arabic word for distribution or division. That is reflected in the diversity of people that one sees passing through Taksim Square, representing the character of modern Turkey.

45% of the country's population is under 25 years old, and since the year 2000 73 new universities have been opened, doubling the previous number.

With reforms opening up more freedoms, is this a new era of Young Turks who will define the future of Turkey?
