Matias was born in Buenos Aires and is now based in Madrid, Spain where he graduated in journalism at the Universidad Complutense. His personal work explores grief, loss and the search for identity through geography and history.


He has won two World Press Photo awards, as well as the Leica Ville de Vevey, UNICEF Children's Awareness Photograph of the Year and the Descubrimientos award for PhotoEspana 1998. Matias has received grants from the Fondation Hachette, Fundacion LaCaixa, the Spanish Ministry of Culture and the Joop Swart Masterclass.


His work is part of the permanent collections at the Moscow Photography Museum, the Region of Madrid, the Spanish Ministry of Culture, Rotterdam Photographic Institute and a number of private collections.
