Romanian b.1976

Graduating with a BA in Journalism and Mass Communication from Bucharest University, Romanian-born Petrut Calinescu has twice won the Romanian Photojournalist of the Year Award as well as receiving a POYI award of excellence for his photograph of Indian bull fighting in Tamil Nadu state.

His last project, The Black Sea, took him around the countries, autonomous republics, and people of the basin created by the inland sea in an examination of the diverse and divisive history and heritage which saturates the region. Commissions and personal projects have led him to India, Kenya, Bolivia, Afghanistan, and China; he is now working on an investigation into how labour migration reshaped Romania, funded in part by World Press Photo.
