Potosi, BOLIVIA

12 year old Jose Lucas and his mother Alberta Benabides work among the rock tailings in the compound of a silver mine. Alberta's late husband was a miner who died 5 years ago of silicosis, a respiratory disease caused by the inhalation of silica dust. Widows of miners are permitted to scour the discarded rocks in search of silver ore to sell.
