Potosi, BOLIVIA

12 year old Jose Lucas Benabides chews coca leaves among the tailings in the compound of a silver mine, where he works with his mother. The leaves stave off hunger and thirst, allowing him to work throughout the day without pausing for a lunch break. His late father was a miner who died 5 years ago of silicosis, a respiratory disease caused by the inhalation of silica dust. Widows of miners are permitted to scour the discarded rocks in search of silver ore to sell.
