18 year old Jackie Green sits on her bed in her room in Leeds. She lives as a woman but was born male and was the youngest child in Britain to have gender-reassignment surgery when she was 16. Jackie had received terrible bullying when she was younger and tried to kill herself five times. 'She found puberty devastating' says her mother. 'I once found her sobbing, holding a knife and threatening to cut off her genitals.' Jackie had gender dysphoria, or gender identity disorder (GID), a condition where a person believes their identity to be different to their biological sex.
