Sulawesi, INDONESIA

A Bajau fisherman steers his boat from Torosiaje, a village built on stilts that stretches one kilometre into the ocean. The Indonesian government has made a concerted effort to move the traditionally nomadic Bajau into settled communities on land, but the Bajau left their government built homes to build and move in to those at Torosiaje. The Bajau (Bajo) Laut are an ethnic group of Malay origin, they have for centuries lived out their lives almost entirely at sea, plying a tract of ocean between Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia.
