A billboard outside a furniture shop in Orange Beach, Alabama, advertises a 'BP Disaster Sale'. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill caused great damage to the Gulf Coast's economy. Although now local businesses are able to apply for compensation for their losses by filing claims against a USD 20 billion fund established by BP. On 20 April 2010, an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig left 17 workers injured and 11 dead. For over three months, oil spilled from a well 5000 feet below sea level in the Gulf of Mexico, discharging over 500,000 gallons of crude oil a day (19,000 barrels). It is estimated that more than 120 million gallons of crude oil have spewed into the Gulf.
