A boy looks out to sea where the stricken tanker Nadezhda has run aground near Nevelsk on the southwestern coast of Sakhalin island, spilling large amounts of crude oil into the sea.
Until recently the only public association able to hold Rosneft and Gazprom to account in terms of environmental protection was Eko Vakhta Sakhalin (Sakhalin Environmental Watchdog), but in September 2015 the government declared it a 'foreign agent' severely hampering the organisation's work.
