Pacux, Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, Guatemala

A ceremony commemorates the 32nd anniversary of the Los Encuentros massacre where on 14 May 1982, soldiers and civil patrolmen killed 79 community members from Rio Negro who were hiding there after two previous massacres in February and March of the same year. Eyewitnesses assured that at least 15 other community members were abducted in a helicopter. One of these was three year old Manuel Chen Sanchez, whose remains were exhumed from a mass grave at Coban's former Military Zone 21 in 2012 by the Guatemalan Forensic Anthropology Foundation (FAFG). Manuel's remains were identified by matching DNA samples with his parents who live in the community of Pacux, where the former residents of Rio Negro were resettled after the destruction of their village and flooding of the Chixoy river basin.
