Kinshasa, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

A church in the Matete district which specialises in healing witches', particularly children. Ma Jolie, the priest, claims a special gift: by praying she can ascertain those who are tainted by witchcraft. The hype over child witches is out of control in the city: a series of innocuous events in a family home, such as a broken-down fridge, can result in one of the children being castigated as an evil influence. Religion is a flourishing business in poverty-ridden Kinshasa. Over 2000 Pentecostal churches have sprung up over the last few years, promising miracles but delivering little to alleviate the hopelessness of the worshippers. Some of the charismatic preachers, however, have amassed huge personal fortunes. Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire).
