Alayung Thaksin

Myanmar, BURMA

A family outside their home, which was damaged by Cyclone Nargis. Over 150 people drowned in this village alone and the tidal surge reportedly reached up to 12 feet in places. Here, a pre-Buddhist 'gnat' (spirit deity) is placed outside the home. During the day, the red curtain must be opened, and at night the curtains must be closed. If not the gnat will be angry. There is a strong belief in the protecting (and conversely vengeful) power of gnats. Cyclone Nargis hit Burma on 02/05/2008. Mwe Be Village, near Pyapon, Ayeyarawaddy Division.
