A gondola on the Grand Canal, in front of the Rialto Bridge. Otherwise known as Canalazzo, the Grand Canal is the main waterway which runs through the heart of the city. Gondoliers traditionally wear a striped T-shirt and a straw boater hat. Each of the boats is hand-crafted from nine different types of wood. The metal 'ferro' attached to the front of the boat counteracts the weight of the gondolier. Its metal teeth symbolise the six districts (or 'Sestieri') of Venice.
