A group of women have their photo taken on the deck of a 2,600-ton ship which was carried two miles inland by the 2004 tsunami and remianed stranded when the waters receded. A new city park has been built around the ship with a memorial enshrining hundreds of photographs that document the tsunami devastation. It has become a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. On 26 December 2004 a 9.0 magnitude earthquake triggered a massive tsunami that killed 226,000 people throughout several countries. In Aceh, the death toll alone was 166,000.
