Szeged, Hungary

A Hungarian police patrol vehicle parked by a border post. A pile of sleeping bags have been discarded, probably by undocumented migrants, with whom a nearby crossing is popular since, as yet, there is only a narrow waterway, formed by a loop from the Tisza River, to cross in order to get into Hungary (and the EU). The migrants then usually stay hidden in the forested banks of the Tisza until an opportunity to move on arises, usually a taxi from the nearby city of Szeged. The practice is illegal, but the authorities generally turn a blind eye to the taxi drivers making extra income this way, and at the same time moving on the problem of what to do with the huge numbers of unwanted migrants.
