Salvatore, Bujanovac, SERBIA

A Kosovan (Kosovar) refugee with a homemade tattoo at the Salvatore refugee camp. 'It is not very pretty, but it is important for me', she says. The camp houses many displaced Serbian Roma gypsies who fled from Kosovo at the end of the war. Thousands of ethnic Serbs and other non-Albanian minorities fled from their homes in Kosovo after Serbian administration collapsed in 1999. Many are now living in makeshift settlements in Serbia while awaiting the outcome of UN-sponsored talks concerning the future status of Kosovo. There is a widespread fear amongst the refugees that they will not be able to return to the region if it achieves its independence.
