, CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC

A man is detained by Seleka rebels who claim that the man was a thief, although he had not been subject to any court appearance or regular justice procedure. He had been beaten bloody and his arms were tied behind his back to his feet very tightly. He was screaming and crying. The man was untied at the photographer's request, but his fate afterwards was unknown. Seleka rebels ousted the Central African Republic President in a Coup d'Etat in March 2013. They immediately began enlisting unemployed youth into their ranks. These youths were given a brief training, armed and sent out to patrol the city. However, chaos has ensued as coup leader Michel Djotodia and his new government struggle to control their soldiers. Looting is widespread and there are regular clashes between different Seleka groupings.
