Mytilini-Panoskala, Greece

A man leaps into the sea to catch the cross thrown into the waters by a priest during the celebration of Epiphany (Theofania or Fota), marked across Greece each year on January 6. It commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist. During Theofania, priests bless the waters by throwing a cross into a sea, lake or river while many brave swimmers jump into the cold waters to retrieve it and get the priest's blessing for the year. According to the Greek Orthodox Church, on that day a miracle happens as the nature of water changes and becomes incorrupt.
