A member of the medical staff wipes the brow of COVID-19 patient Haydar Sal in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Homerton Hospital.

Haydar Sal was the first patient in the second wave to leave the ICU alive. ''The worst thing was seeing the people around me die'', he said, ''I saw a lot of people beg every kind of God they could think of to survive''.

At the height of England's second wave of COVID-19 infections, the Homerton Hospital had around 30 COVID-19 patients in its ICU. The purpose built ICU at the Homerton only takes 10 patients, so another ward had to converted into a temporary ICU, known as the 'Escalation' ward, it had room for 20 patients.
