Jakarta, Java, INDONESIA

A newly completed elevated road cuts through the south Jakarta skyline, separating the village-like atmosphere of "old" Jakarta (with its mosques and tile-roofed homes) from the skyscrapers of "new" Jakarta, on the horizon. With 10-plus million people living in the capital - 25 million, if the Greater Metropolitan area is counted - over 1000 cars are being added each day to Jakartas' roads. Gridlock is predicted sometime in 2014 unless something is done to alleviate the chronic traffic situation. Much of the traditional suburban village atmosphere of this traditionally low-rise city is disappearing in a cloud of smog and cement dust from hastily constructed flyovers and elevated roads.
