A photo of Holocaust survivor Kazimierz Piechowski taken in Auschwitz when he was 20 years old. Piechowski was a boy scout during the Second Polish Republic and then, during World War II, a political prisoner of the Nazis at Auschwitz concentration camp, a soldier in the Polish Home Army (Armia Krajowa) and then, after the war's end, a prisoner for seven years of the communist government of Poland. He is known for his daring escape from Auschwitz when, along with three other prisoners all dressed as members of the SS-Totenkopfverbande, they drove outof the main gate in a stolen SS staff car.
