Benghazi, LIBYA

A photograph of Mehdi Mohammed Zeyo inside the central courthouse in Benghazi. Zeyo was a middle manager at the Libyan state oil company in Benghazi. As protests against the regime of Muammar Gaddafi started to intensify in the city he decided to load his car with propane gas cannisters and drive it into the gates of the Katiba (garrison) compound which housed pro-Gaddafi forces who had been killing civilians over the preceding days. The explosion tore a hole through the gate allowing anti Gaddafi fighters to enter the compound and effectively take control of the city of Benghazi for the opposition.
