Himachal Pradesh, Shimla (Simla), INDIA

A porter carries crates of soft drinks, past a mother and schoolboy, up one of Shimla's steeply inclined streets. The city's steep, narrow streets and an abundance of staircases means most goods have to be moved around the city manually. The city is in the foothills of the Himalayas, and sits at an elevation of 2,000 metres. It was the summer capital of the British Raj and remains today a popular hill station resort for domestic and foreign visitors.
