A Rapid Action Force Policeman stands guard in front of a mob in Ayodhya on 14 March 2002. The city had been sealed off to prevent thousands of kar sewaks or Hindu holy men from building a temple on the site of the destroyed Babri Mosque. Two weeks earlier, on 28 February 2002, communal riots triggered by an attack by a Muslim mob on the Sabarmati Express, a train carrying Hindu pilgrims returning from Ayodyha, left between 1,000 and 2,000 people dead, tens of thousands homeless and caused the destruction of hundreds of places of worship. 58 people were killed in the train attack.
