Remba Island, Lake Victoria, Kenya

A shopkeeper in his well-stocked electronics store on Remba Island in Lake Victoria. It is home to a population of fishermen living in overcrowded one-room shacks, squeezed together and lacking sanitation or power, giving the island its nick-name: 'Slum Island'. About 10 percent of the residents have access to electricity from diesel run generators which are very expensive and bad for the environment. There is a movement on Remba to create sustainable energy through wind and solar, distributed and paid for via micro grids and mobile phones.
