A sign on the road to Venice, Louisiana. Signs errected by the public expressing frustration and anger towards BP (previously known as British Petroleum) and US officials remain scattered along the Louisiana coast since the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. On 20 April 2010, an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig left 17 workers injured and 11 dead. For over three months, oil spilled from a well 5000 feet below sea level in the Gulf of Mexico, discharging over 500,000 gallons of crude oil a day (19,000 barrels). It is estimated that more than 120 million gallons of crude oil have spewed into the Gulf.
