A sign references part of John Edwards' stump speech in which he says his father borrowed $50 to bring him home from the hospital. Edwards, Democrat candidate for President, tried to appeal to working class voters by telling the story that his father worked in a mill, just as his grandmother had. His father even had to borrow $50 to bring him home from the hospital at birth. In parts of South Carolina, where Edwards was born, a running joke has developed with people pretending that they were the ones who loaned John Edwards' father the money. Edwards has since earned millions as a trial lawyer.
