Kiruna, SWEDEN

A small pavilion in the garden of artist and painter Gunvor Olofsson who has lived in Kiruna her whole life. Her grandparents moved here in the 19th century and many family members have stayed here since then. 'The people in the south know nothing about us up here in Norrbotten, yet we supply them with ore, water and wood. I get annoyed with ignorance. There is a lot of money coming from industry here but the taxes end up in Stockholm or Lulea.' The Kiirunavaara mountain near Kiruna contains one of the world's largest contiguous deposits of iron ore. The mine has caused structural weaknesses for the town above, leading to the decision to move the town centre three kilometres to the East.
