A split image showing Marcela Pattjin and her room at the Beguinage in Kortrijk. Forming in the 13th Century, the Beguines were Christian lay women who lived semi-monastic lives. They grouped their houses together to form a Beguinage, but did not take vows that confined them to that space. They could return to the outsdide world if they wished and they could marry. Marcela Pattjin was the last Beguine and died on 16 April 2013 aged 92 at this Beguinage.
