Minzayar Oo/Unearth-NRGI

Mai Naung, Myanmar ( Burma )

A team of miners working at an illegal gold mine near Indawgyi Lake. The team, led by chief miner Win Oo, the eldest among them, works at a daily rate that can be as low as 5000 Kyats (about GBP 3.00) per day each with their meals paid for. This mine, which is one of the hundreds of small-scale gold mines located amid the forests and mountains east of Indawgyi Lake is owned by an ethnic Kachin widow and her daughter. On a very good day, this small family-run mine can produce about 1 kyattha (a tical) which is worth about 800000 Kyats (about GBP 400) but the cost of fuel, labour and other materials used for mining each day takes up a big chunk of their daily find.
