Rumbek, Lakes State (Al-Buhayrat), South Sudan, SUDAN
A woman accused of adultery waits to give her testimony to the judge in a court of law. Local women are frequently accused of adultery, which is illegal, by their husbands and many of them end up imprisoned as a result. The jailing of women for "adultery" is often linked to dowry and other marital disputes. Occasionally, women committed to arranged marriages themselves attempt to be jailed for adultery crimes in order to provoke their husbands into granting them a divorce. The de facto state of 'New Sudan' has set up its own legal system.
