Gori, GEORGIA

A woman crosses the main square in Gori as Georgian troops pass the other way, under an imposing statue of Joseph Stalin. Stalin was born in Gori. Georgia launched a series of attacks in an effort to reclaim the breakaway region of South Ossetia, which has had de facto independence - and Russian backing - since the end of a conflict in 1992. The attacks prompted Russia to retaliate against positions within South Ossetia and Georgia.
