A woman dressed in her Sunday robes walks through Zhara church forest.

Forest land surrounding churches have become islands of biodiversity in seas of agriculture, the last remnants of a once-expansive native cover. Conservation is a key tenet of the Tewahdo Ethiopian Orthodox which has protected them until now when these forests are threatened like never before as agriculture expands to cope with the country's booming population which is due to double over the next 30 years.
