A woman walks down a road in in Kisennuma, a city severely damaged by the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. The snow covered terrain is where parts of the town once stood. On 11 March 2011 a magnitude 9 earthquake struck 130 km off the coast of Northern Japan causing a massive Tsunami that swept across the coast of Northern Honshu. The earthquake and tsunami caused extensive damage and loss of life. One year after the earthquake much of the rubble and detritus washed up by the Tsunami has been cleared away but many towns and villages have not been rebuilt and remain largely deserted.
