Ahikam Seri

Gush Katif, Gaza Strip, ISRAEL (PALESTINE)

A young man is arrested during a raid on the Palm Beach Hotel, which had been taken over by about 150 right-wing Israeli squatters fighting the Israeli disengagement from Gaza. The settlers had renamed the hotel Maoz Hayam (fortified place). But in the event the raid by 500 policemen and soldiers swiftly overcame their resistance and cleared the hotel, in one of the opening salvoes of the withdrawal. The Israeli government disbanded the settlements in Gaza and the northern West Bank as part of Ariel Sharon's disengagement program in August 2005.
