A young man waiting to cross the border rests his head and shields himself from the mid-day sun after waiting for several hours. After several days of relative order a large group of refugees and migrants surged forward after becoming impatient while being kept waiting by Greek police who were struggling to organise the large numbers of people who had arrived on Friday morning. As a result the Macedonian forces controlling the border would not let anyone through until they calmed down and organised themselves in groups of 50 to cross in an orderly fashion. Thousands of refugees and migrants, many of them from Syria, have been crossing the border between Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia as they continue their onward journey through Eastern Europe. After clashes between Macedonian security forces and those waiting to cross the situation has now calmed somewhat as the authorities on both sides together with help of UNHCR have created a system to control the flow of people through the border.
