Abeer Muhammed's marriage certificate. She was married as a teenager in Syria, by candlelight and this is all that remains of her marriage. The wedding was performed by a sheikh in war-torn Aleppo. It carried no legal weight, so as a divorcee she has no rights. Her husband beat her violently, bringing home another woman to live with them before being jailed for killing a woman. Abeer now lives in Syria with her widowed mother Fatma and their children.
