Afghan farmer Salam Jan examines saffron crocus flowers. Saffron cultivation projects are developing as an alternative to opium production near the city of Tarin Kowt in Uruzgan Province. One kilo of saffron spice, harvested from the stigmas of the saffron crocus flower, can fetch up to £1390.00 GBP on international markets and even locally earns farmers significantly more per kilo than opium.
