Darband village, Kurdistan, IRAQ

After inserting a special pin to stop the mine detonating, team leader Salahaddin Mahamad carefully lifts the crown out of the body of a Valmara mine. The spiky crowns of the deadly Valmara landmines are hard to see. The slightest nudge of one sensitive spike could result in death for any person or animal within 30 metres. The first explosion would propel the main body of the mine a metre into the air. A millisecond later the main explosion blasts shrapnel at ballistic speeds at 360 degrees.
