Muanda, Democratic Republic of Congo

After laying its eggs on the beach, a leatherback turtle drifts back into the deep ocean with the current of the Congo River. The river is so powerful here that the water is discharged 800 kilometres out to sea. In the fifteenth century, this fresh water led to the discovery by Portuguese navigators of the Congo River.
