Alexander Kovalenko, 58, outside his destroyed apartment in the Kievsky District. Being close to the airport, the district has suffered massive shelling leading to the evacuation of most of its population. Alexander is one of the only people remaining in the area and refuses to leave. 'No matter what I will survive here and live on,' he says, defiantly. 'It is impossible to live here. It is only me who lives here. People come and go. There are no pensions, no water, no light, no gas. The shelling was 24/7. Grads, mines, they used all types of artillery and all the time. I have never left.. I was born in this house and I will die in it.' Over one million people have now been displaced inside Ukraine due to the conflict. Eastern Ukraine has seen heavy fighting between pro-Russia separatists and the Ukrainian army in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions since the overthrow of President Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014.
