Ali Ahmeti, political and military leader of the ethnic Albanian National Liberation Army (NLA), at his headquarters in the mountain village of Shipkovica.
Macedonia was plunged into crisis in 2001 as rebels staged an uprising, demanding greater rights for the ethnic Albanian minority. A peace agreement brokered by the EU and NATO eventually saw the rebels lay down their arms in return for an acknowledgement of ethnic Albanian rights in a new national constitution.
