Altaf stares out of the window in the apartment that he and his son share with a few others. He lives a clandestine existence as although a red card holder Athens is one of the cities where he is not permitted to stay. The journey from war-torn Syria that he undertook with his family was fraught with danger and frustrations. It took six attempts for the family of four to successfully enter Greece. Despite official state policy of not turning back anyone in distress at sea or those who have entered Greek territor he claims that they were consistently turned away by the Greek coastguard and sent back to Turkey both by land and water. Although one child made a successful entry by land most of the family had to endure a dangerous and expensive sea journey from the Turkish coast.
