An activist and a journalist monitoring developments on the sea as protestors in boats take direct action to try and prevent the expansion of US Military base Camp Schwab.

The US military want to move their Futenma base here but have faced protests from a concerned local population. In 2014 Takeshi Onaga was elected as the governor of Okinawa Prefecture which covers both bases. He opposes the expansion of the Camp Schwab site, and wants the Futemna base moved off Okinawa. In 2015 Onaga revoked permission for the commencement of building work which is currently stalled and likely only to be resolved by the courts.
