Tapajos National Forest, BRAZIL

An athlete grimaces as he has his blisters lanced by a doctor during the Amazon Jungle Marathon 2013. For seven days the runners cross Amazonian swamps and rivers and climb muddy hills all beneath such a dense canopy covering that barely a chink of daylight gets through. They must cope with humidity levels of around 99% and temperatures of 40c while running the 254km course. This man had to retire from the race the following day as the pain from all the blisters eventually became unbearable.
