An Iftar dinner at the Marriott hotel organised by the Muslim World Congress. The iftar meal is held after sundown during Ramadan. In the centre is the distinctive figure of Ahmad Ratib, sporting an eye-patch and impressive beard and missing several fingers from his right hand. Ratib worked as a translator for Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, the Taliban ambassador in Pakistan, who is at the table behind (in white, with his back to the camera) holding talks with the Iranian ambassador. That month, the Taliban regime had lost control of most of Afghanistan. Zaeef was later arrested and held in extrajudicial detention in Guantanamo Bay by the American authorities, before being released in 2005.
