An iman leads the prayers at the funeral and mass burial of Rohingya refugees who drowned when their boat broke up in bad weather when trying to land on the coast near Cox's Bazar on the night before. More than 100 people were on board. According to the police 17 survivors were found, along with the bodies of 15 women and children.
The United Nations reported that by 29 September 2017 more than 500,000 Rohingya refugees had crossed the border from Myanmar into Bangladesh. They are fleeing a campaign by the Myanmar military that began on 25 August 2017, responding, according to the military, to attacks by Rohingya militants against several police posts in which 12 officers were killed. The UN, however, have described the military action as 'a textbook example of ethnic cleansing', stating that the campaign is 'clearly disproportionate'.
