Ahikam Seri

Gush Katif, Gaza Strip, ISRAEL (PALESTINE)

An Israeli settler patrolling the perimeter of the Palm Beach hotel a few minutes before it was raided. The hotel had been taken over by about 150 right-wing Israeli squatters fighting the Israeli disengagement from Gaza. The settlers had renamed the hotel Maoz Hayam (fortified place). But in the event a raid by 500 policemen and soldiers swiftly overcame their resistance and cleared the hotel, in one of the opening salvoes of the withdrawal. The Israeli government disbanded the settlements in Gaza in August 2005.
